Introducing the course (Beginner Version)

Meet the course instructors

Kobayashi sensei

We tried to make the conversations in the Pre-Intermediate course use more natural Japanese than in the Beginner Course. It contains many expressions that you often hear in your life in Japan and words that are convenient to learn. Enjoy and study with our role-play scenarios. I hope this Pre-Intermediate Course will help you to continue to lay the foundation for your Japanese language and take it to the next level.

Hodota sensei

I have been working as a Japanese language teacher ever since I finished graduate school in 2008. This course is one step further from the Beginner Course. I am in charge of all the lessons of "Conversation Notes" starting from this course, where you can learn some tips that can be used to communicate in Japanese. It may seem a little hard to listen to long stories in Japanese at first, but watching videos over and over will help you understand more and more.

Soejima sensei

I always wanted to be a Japanese teacher and I've been teaching Japanese for almost 30 years (yes I'm not very young! ^^). I've taught in Japanese language schools and universities. All the teachers that worked to build this course have worked very hard to focus on the Japanese you will be able to use as soon as you come to Japan in everyday life. I am the teacher in charge of answering all the queries and questions in the student community, checking your flipgrid uploads and running private Add-on lessons. I interact daily with students in the community to answer any questions or help solve anyone's doubts.

FAQ

  • Who created the Akamonkai Pre-Intermediate Online Japanese Course?

The course was created by Go! Go! Nihon in partnership with Akamonkai Japanese Language School, the largest Japanese Language School in Tokyo, and builds on the Akmonkai 12-week online Japanese beginner course.

  • What will I learn on the course?

By the time you complete the whole course, you will be able to understand beginner pre-intermediate level Japanese and you will have covered the material needed to be able to take JLPT N4. This course will build on JLPT N5 grammar points studied in the Akamonkai Beginner course. Teach you how to read and write 180 kanji, over 1,350 vocabulary words and how to use them. It will help you express yourself using different speech styles in Japanese and teach you how Japanese conversation works. It has unique study points, especially in verbal communication, that you won't find in ordinary textbooks. It also includes reading tasks to help you better understand written Japanese.

  • How do the online classes work?

The course begins when you enrol, with 5 days of lessons being released each week until all the course content is unlocked. We advise you to complete the lessons chronologically but don’t worry if you cannot complete them when they are released. Once you have bought the course, the content is available for six months from when you join. There are lessons using video, text files, audio files and more to help you learn easily. For some lessons, you could be shown a conversation video, backup grammar slides and also repetition videos. Other times it might be an audio file and downloadable vocabulary sheet. We show you the best materials to help you understand new topics quickly. There are opportunities for you to create your own videos to share with us so we can check your understanding and progress. We also have a community where you can engage with other students on the same journey as you, ask questions, compare notes and even engage with the course leaders.

  • Which level of Japanese do I need to start this course?

Before starting this course, you should have already completed the 12-week Akamonkai Online Beginner course or completed equivalent studies up to JLPT N5 level including learning Hiragana and katakana, 91 beginner kanji and all the grammar points and vocabulary to JLPT N5.

  • Do I have to finish the courses in a specific amount of time or keep an attendance rate?

You can only get your course certificate if you complete every lesson, however even though it is a 12-week course you have six months to finish the course.

  • What is the course curriculum?

See below for a list of all the lessons in the course.

  • How long do I have to complete the course?

You have access to the material for 6 months after you purchase the course. Lessons are released in weekly batches until all 12 weeks are available. You can study at your own pace once the lessons are unlocked. We do recommend trying to do a day's material each weekday as it’s how courses are taught in Japan! But, don't worry, if you cannot finish it within six months, you can enroll in our alumni subscription to extend it with a monthly fee.

Coming from a language-learning app, I thought the course would be way too different for me to handle, but it was actually super easy and fun. This course was full of information in every lesson and there is so much to learn, not just words and expressions. There were lots of explanations, videos, audios, and extra information that ordinary language learning wouldn’t teach you. The course is also very well designed, making sure to provide every piece of information you need. The course made me want to continue learning and I think that that’s a good indicator for how much I liked the course.

Bite-sized lessons make this course ideal for beginners and people with busy lives. I like to study language in my free time, and the way this course is organized makes it easy to squeeze in a lesson even if I only have 20 minutes to spare. The concepts are explained simply and already help you start speaking Japanese by Week 1. By Week 4, kanji and grammar lessons spoken completely in Japanese are introduced; so it's a good pace of increasing difficulty as I become more confident in my listening/reading skills.
